Way to Go OLBR!

On Friday, May 17th, our school track team participated in the Diocesan school-wide track meet at St. Francis High School in Athol Springs. We are very proud of the entire team for their efforts and we would like to recognize those who received ribbons in their events:

1st Place Softball Throw (13 & under): Nasir Benton

Action for Healthy Kids (AFHK) fights childhood obesity, undernourishment and physical inactivity by helping schools become healthier places so kids can live healthier lives. At our core are thousands of committed and passionate people who have banded together to create healthier learning environments for children.

Since 2004, Action for Healthy Kids has recognized Healthy School Heroes for their exceptional dedication and service towards the vision, mission, and goals of Action for Healthy Kids through volunteer work in a school community.

This year, they are recognizing Healthy School Heroes nationally in two categories:

1. State Teams – Individuals who are working at the state or regional level with Action for Healthy Kids state teams to move AFHK programs and initiatives forward.

2. Grassroots Volunteers – Individuals who are working in school communities to advance the AFHK mission.

On Thursday April 25th 2013, Our Lady of Black Rock School hosted a Health and Wellness Night for its families and the larger community of Black Rock. The event comprised of informational presentations on nutrition made by the school’s SHIFT Committee, a taste-testing of a variety of healthy foods, and a fair of local organizations. These included: Baker Victory Services, the Erie County Department of Health, Catholic Charities, and Faith Fitness –a local business that incorporates exercise with religious teaching.

OLBR To Perform Benefit Concert

As part of Assumption Church's 125th Anniversary Celebration, the Children's Choir of Our Lady of Black Rock School will be presenting a Benefit Concert on Thursday, May 9, 2013 at Assumption Church. This event will take place at 6:30 PM and a reception for guests will follow the concert.

OLBR Announces Science Fair Winners

Middle School Science Fair @ OLBR

Congratulations to the following students who were recognized with a ribbon and cash award at our recent Science Fair that was held on Wednesday, April 10th. Student projects were judged by certified teachers. Each student who competed was interviewed by a judge and had the opportunity to defend their hypothesis, research, and conclusion.

Grade 6 Winners:

1st Place: Joshua Lysarz; 2nd Place: Vincent Mirabelli; 3rd Place: Dallas Howard

Grade 7 Winners:

1st Place: Jaiden Collins-Miller; 2nd Place: Kim Hong Suy; 3rd Place: Josephine Leising

Grade 8 Winners: 

1st Place: Elyane Ndayigiyime; 2nd Place: Parys Springer; 3rd Place: Rebecca Lysarz

OLBR Visits Cardinal O'Hara to see "Little Shop of Horrors"

Our Lady of Black Rock is one of a handful of Buffalo Public and Catholic schools who are recipients of the New York State Department of Education Technology Grant: Using mobile technology in the classroom to enhance student learning. The grant is for a three year time period. Students will each receive an iPad to be used during Social Studies classes.

This great tradition, sponsored by the OLBR 8th grade class, continues as in years past, but this year promises to please your palate with fresh, hot off the griddle pancakes, sausage, coffee, tea, and juice. Also, there will be a mini-basket raffle for you to enjoy. All of the proceeds from this event go directly to help the students fundraising efforts for their class trip to Cleveland, Hope Ribbon day, and Graduation.   read more...
